Local teachers and counselors will participate in a two-week (July 20th – 31st) Emerging Leaders Initiative Teacher Externship Program that immerses them in Coastal Bend careers. Workforce Solutions of the Coastal Bend’s Emerging Leaders Initiative has provided grant funding to Citizens for Educational Excellence and Hammons Educational Leadership Program to create partnerships among workforce, industry and educators to develop an effective workforce system by allowing this select group to make the connection between academic skills and the workplace.

Middle and high school teachers and counselors will engage in activities through the externship in which they will learn about skill sets in various career fields and learn how classroom content can be applied in the real world. In addition to experiencing the daily rigors of occupations in health care, law enforcement, tourism, and industry, participants will tour the Del Mar College West Campus, Craft Training Center of the Coastal Bend, and Coastal Compass Education and Career Resource Center. At the conclusion of the program, teachers will use what they have learned to develop lesson plans that will inform, educate, and allow students to experience a myriad of careers.

Employers participating in the program include the following: Nueces County Sheriff’s Department, Corpus Christi Fire and Police Departments, Corpus Christi International Airport, Nueces Electric Cooperative, Ready Flo, Ainsworth Trucking, Holiday Inn, Radisson, Embassy Suites, Baseline Data, Mirador, local realtors, and healthcare providers. The sixteen educators are from Calallen, Corpus Christi, Flour Bluff, and West Oso ISDs and were required to apply for positions in the program.
